Abstract
The data set pertaining to this project is in respect of the year 1980. The Data Processing Division of the Department of Census and Statistics has undertaken the task of processing and printing tabulations of the vehicle registration data handed over by the Department of Motor Traffic (Registrar of Motor Vehicles). Information pertaining to each vehicle which has been registered with RMV during the year 1980 has been recorded in this data set.
Each vehicle is assigned a series code and a distinctive number where the combination of the two forms the vehicle number by which the vehicle could be uniquely identified. No two vehicles could be registered under the same vehicle number. There is a possibility that a particular vehicle is registered for the second time with a new vehicle number due to reasons like change of fuel type. It is usual practice that a vehicle ownership has to be re-registered under the new owner when the vehicle is transferred to a new owner.

Supervision
Issue the documents by Series code. Once the verification is complete, the cards should be counted on the sorter and the figures in respect of each series should be noted. All cards must be sight checked by series code on Cols 1 - 2 and Cols 79 - 80 before transferring to the computer room. Cards in respect of changes should be punched separately and marked 'Changes'. The output should be 800 cards per day per operator.
The computer supervisor will receive the boxed , punched and verified cards for each series. The control figures by series must be maintained. Feed the cards for each series through the edit run. Sight checking should be done for Series code, Columns 1-2, Job number (columns 79-80). The cards marked 'Changes' should also go through the Edit run. Once the original data or 'Changes' are error free, the data should be re-coded and then updated. Updating should be done once a month whenever 'Changes' have been received. Some tables (2 - 8) are processed monthly while 1A and 1B are done bi-annually in June and December. The data cards used should be that relating to the month of processing.

Data Collection Notes
The data book which is called the punching document is bound by the Motor Traffic with 15 pages in a book. A separate book is used to for each Series code. Within a book vehicle details are recorded in the numerical order of the distinctive number. Documents in respect of changes and deletions are recorded separately and arranged in the same manner as above. The filled documents are received in monthly batches.
