This surveycommenced from the first quarter 1990 with USAID  technical assistance and is being continuedby  the  DCS.\nMainly, following information can be obtained by the survey. \n1.The economically active \/ inactive from  population.\n2.Employment by major industry group and employment status.\n3.Unemployment rates by level of education and by age group\n4.The informal sector employment.\n5.The underemployment rates by sector and by major industries\n6.Total Jobs in Sri Lanka with Secondary Employment\n7.Informal Employment in Sri Lanka\n8.Literacy","nation":[{"name":"Sri Lanka","abbreviation":"LKA"}],"geog_coverage":"National coverage except Northern and Eastern provinces","analysis_unit":"Individuals from the population aged 10 years or more","universe":"Working age population (10 years and above) living in the non-institutional households in Sri Lanka."},"method":{"data_collection":{"time_method":"start 01-01-2006 end 31-12-2006","sampling_procedure":"Sampling plan and the sampling frame\n A two stage stratified sampling procedure was adopted to select a sample of 22,000 housing units to be enumerated in the survey. The master \nsampling frame prepared for 2001 \u30fbCensus of Population and Housing was used as the sampling frame for the selection of sample for the labour force survey 2006.\n\nSample size \nThe quarterly survey was conducted since 1990 using a sample of  2,000 housing units per quarter in areas other than North and East, and the sample size was increased to 4,000 housing units per quarter 1996 and continued thereafter. However, in 1992 and 1997, an annual sample of 20,000 housing units was selected to give reliable estimates of district level. In 2004 again 20,000 housing units were selected for the survey. However, in order to provide district level estimates precisely, it was decided to use 20,000 -25,000 housing units as the annual sample. As such, in 2006, the annual sample of  22,000 housing units was selected.\n\nSample Allocation\n Allocation of 2,000 Primary Sampling Units (PSU) for the districts and sectors were done using the Neymann Allocation procedure. In other \nwords, the allocation of PSU to strata was disproportionate, designed to produce estimates of acceptable reliability for each area for which separate estimates were needed. Then The district sample was equally distributed among the 12 monthly rounds.\n\nSelection of Primary Sampling Units (PSU)\nPrimary sampling units are the census blocks prepared for the Census of Population and Housing 2001. The sample frame, which is a collection of all census blocks in the domain, \nwas used for the selection of primary sampling units. A sample of 2,200 primary sampling units was selected from the sampling frame for the 2006 labour force survey.\n\nSelection of Secondary Sampling Units (SSU)\n Secondary Sampling Units are the housing units in the selected 2,200 primary sampling units (census blocks). However, the Data users are required to strictly adhere to\nthe terms stipulated in the agreement form.\n\n\u30fbAll the data requests should be made to Director General (DG) of the DCS as the sole authority of releasing data is vested with the DG, DCS. DCS of Sri Lanka reserves sole right to approve or reject any data request made depending on the confidential nature of the data set and intended purpose of the study or analysis.\n\n\u30fbRequests for micro data should be made through the agreement form designed by DCS for this purpose (Form D.R.1). The agreement form should be filled in triplicate and the Study\/project proposal should accompany the filled agreement form. If requests are made for the micro data of more than one survey, a separate agreement should be signed.\n\n\u30fbIf the data request is from a student a letter from the respective Dept. Head\/Dean\/Supervisor, recommending the issue of data, should also be accompanied.\n\n\u30fbThe released Data file should be used only for the specific study\/Analysis mentioned in the agreement form and shall not be used for any other purpose without the prior approval of the Director General of the DCS. Moreover, Copies of the micro-data file, obtained from the DCS, shall not be given to anyone else without the prior written approval of the Director General of the DCS.\n\n\u30fbThe draft report of the Study\/Analysis should be submitted to the DCS and the concurrence of the DG, DCS, should be obtained before publishing it.
